Protecting Yourself When the IRS Oversteps:


Dealing with the IRS can be intimidating, but that doesn’t mean you’re powerless. The IRS is bound by laws that protect taxpayers, and understanding those protections is your first line of defense if your rights are being abused.


1. Know Your Taxpayer Bill of Rights


The IRS has a Taxpayer Bill of Rights, which includes your right to be informed, to quality service, to pay no more than the correct amount of tax, to challenge the IRS’s position, and to appeal a decision in an independent forum. Familiarizing yourself with these can help you recognize overreach.


2. Document Everything


Keep thorough records of all communications, including phone calls, letters, and emails. Take notes during conversations. This documentation can be crucial if you need to dispute a claim or prove misconduct.


3. Seek Professional Help
